Ingredients

  • 1 lb 450g lean ground beef (or ground turkey)
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 small onion diced
  • 1 bell pepper diced (green, red, or both)
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter for the cheese sauce
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese or provolone
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 sandwich buns or brioche rolls toasted

Instructions

  • Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and bell pepper, and sauté for 3–4 minutes until soft. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  • Push the vegetables to the side of the skillet and add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon. Drain any excess fat.
  • Stir in Worcestershire sauce and beef broth. Simmer for 2–3 minutes.
  • In a small saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Stir in flour to form a roux. Gradually whisk in milk and cook until thickened. Remove from heat and stir in shredded cheese until smooth.
  • Pour the cheese sauce over the beef and vegetable mixture. Stir until well combined.
  • Spoon the mixture onto toasted sandwich buns. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes

  • Make It Lighter: Use ground turkey or chicken instead of beef and reduce the cheese for a lighter option.
  • Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat on the stovetop before serving.
  • Freezing: The filling can be frozen for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge and reheat before serving.
